Entering its peak during the late 1980s until the early 1990s, almost every song played on the radio came from a rock kapak band, with many new bands emerging from the underground scene, clubs, and Battle of the Bands competitions. A cultural and musical shift was happening in Malaysia during this period. Both rock kapak and visual art were entering their golden ages. On the art side, local painters and university artists began bringing in styles influenced by European Modernist movements like Surrealism, Cubism, and Expressionism.
